An iPhone passkey migration checklist for iOS 26

Separate direct credential exchange from CSV export, check both password managers, and verify a new sign-in before retiring your old setup.

Moving to a different password manager on an iPhone starts with two separate checks: whether the source can send the credentials you need, and whether the destination can receive them. The operating-system version is another condition, not a substitute for either check.

Find the direct exchange route

1Password's export documentation describes direct Credential Exchange from its iPhone and iPad apps on iOS or iPadOS 26 and later, including passkeys, to supported destination apps. It distinguishes this mobile route from desktop exports. Consequently, a desktop export option should not be treated as evidence that the same passkeys will move.

Bitwarden's iOS import guide likewise describes a CXP route on iOS 26 or later. Its Apple Passwords example starts in the source, where the user chooses the export-to-another-app option, reviews the items, then selects Bitwarden and confirms the import. Follow the exact instructions for your chosen pair rather than borrowing Android steps.

An operating-system upgrade does not make every vault interchangeable. Check the source, destination, credential type and transfer direction together. Record a restriction as a restriction; leave a missing answer unverified.

Write down what a successful move means

Before starting, identify the services you need to keep using and whether each has a working alternative sign-in or recovery route. Your private checklist can distinguish passwords, passkeys, verification codes and other items. You do not need to copy the secrets themselves into that checklist or into this site.

  • Open both official apps and confirm their current account and software requirements.
  • Start with a low-stakes service and review the items that the exchange interface actually offers.
  • After the import, begin a new sign-in at that service and select the destination manager's credential.
  • Check important services individually before changing your default manager or retiring a previous sign-in method.

Keep CSV export separate

Apple's CSV export guide describes exporting account passwords to a file and warns that the file is unencrypted. That workflow should not be mistaken for proof of passkey transfer. Check the credential type named by the instructions, not just the word “export.”

Handle an unavailable route calmly

If the destination is missing or a credential type is not offered, stop and consult the two vendors' current support pages. Where the service permits it, registering an additional passkey in the new manager may be an alternative. Confirm the new sign-in while the old one still works. Passkey Atlas provides a preparation plan; the official apps and the service perform the actual migration and sign-in.
